Railways represent the most significant human achievement of the 19th century. Despite a geographical context that was not conducive to communications, the Hautes-Alpes region was served by the railway at the dawn of the 20th century under the control of the Paris-Lyon-Mediterranean Railway Company (PLM): the train arrived at Briançon station on 15 September 1884.
